lateef baloch Hunger strike till death protest day 14 |
05-May-2014, Day 14.Lateef Johar
is rapidly losing weight as it is now nearly 320 hours since he started
protest. People should rally behind him and also ask him to end strike.. Lateef Johar, a BSO-Azad member, has been on hunger strike since April 22 outside the Karachi Press Club sindh Provence in Pakistan , and his condition is fast deteriorating.
There are four concerns that arise around this issue. One and two, concern the media. The young man has displayed immense courage but the otherwise hysterical private media has not really covered it yet. Secondly, as a society so over-exposed to violence, we have perhaps started to ignore and overlook non-violent protests. Had this gentleman blown himself up in front of the Karachi Press Club, wouldn’t everyone take notice? The BSO-Azaad is separatist and seeking freedom for Balochistan. Which brings us to the third concern: is abducting members and censoring protests the solution? Has it yielded any positive results in the last decade? However, the most potent question is, if Lateef dies, who will be responsible? Is the Army answerable? Are the agencies and Frontier Constabulary to be held accountable, as they are in charge of law and order in Balochistan? Should we question the current PML-N government, which promised to resolve the conflict in Balochistan before the elections, but has forgotten it during the fatal business of talks with the Taliban?

Balochistan Student Organization-Azaad (BSO-Azaad) is an ethno-centric student organization fighting for the separation and freedom of Balochistan. Over 100 members of the organization have been reported missing, and the organization is still considered popular amongst Baloch students. On the 18th of March, Zahid Baloch, the chairperson of BSO-Azaad was abducted and is now reported missing, like thousands of other Baloch.
However, there was a unique turn to this abduction
As we debate these concerns (perhaps a little too late) a young boy has been quietly dying to further his cause. It is crucial that the country sit up and take note, and ask some questions of its own.

The
protestors demanded to lodge an FIR against FC who they say had whisked
away Zahid Baloch in presence of other BSO-Azad leaders.
The procession led by Mama Abdul Qadeer Baloch whose son leader of
Baloch Republican Party (BRP) Abdul Jaleel Reki’ mutilated body was
found dumped a couple of years ago in Kech district.
Procession started in front of the Quetta Press Club and wanted to
stage a sit-in protest in front of the Chief Minister Secretariat.
However, the protestors were stopped near Hockey Chowk where police
erected barricades. The protesting women chanted full throat slogans
against security forces for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and
throwing the mutilated bodies of Baloch political opponents.
“Our demand is to produce the Chairman of BSO-Azad before the court
of law. FC in front of other members of BSO had abducted Zahid Baloch
from a house in SatelliteTown,” said Mama Qadeer, adding that the
security forces will kill Zahid in illegal detention cell, if immediate
action was not taken. “The security forces going to kill Zahid Baloch.
The eyewitnesses are willing to testify,” he added.
The traffic on Zarghoon Road remained blocked for hours which caused
the traffic jam. Later on Deputy Commissioner Quetta came to pacify the
angry protestors. He assured that he will look into the matter and would
lodge the FIR about the incident.
Farzana Majeed Baloch whose brother has been missing for years has
said there is serious threat to the life of Zahid Baloch and her brother
Zakir Majeed, leader of central committee BSO-Azad. “Security forces
and state-backed militants are trying to eliminate the leadership of the
Baloch Students Organization. Hundreds of activists of BSO-Azad had
been abducted and their dead bodies were thrown in Balochistan,” she
said.
She said young Baloch leaders are being punished and brutally killed because of their peaceful struggle to attain their rights.
There was no statement from security forces about the arrest of
BSO-Azad leader. However, security forces on several occasion denied the
allegations.
